Roughly translating to ‘the one who prays doesn’t get depressed’, Tanya Shamil’s depiction of a faithless girl battling with mental illness reflects the contested idea that faith is a solution to mental illness. In a vibrant colour palette, with comical flair, Shamil’s work is both pressing and reflective. It forces and challenges conventions around mental illness, especially within the Middle East, where conditions such as depression and anxiety are looked at as flaws rather than curable conditions. Is it harmful to spread rumours around the affects and effects of mental health? Is it better to spread awareness on these topics? Is there a generational divide making the happening of these discussions more difficult, or, is the unfortunate barrier religion?

Tanya Shamil is a 17-year-old artist and filmmaker, based in Oman. She began depicting Middle Eastern culture through her creative practice using “Arabemoji”, the app she launched in 2016. She creates artworks for social commentary in order to spark reflection and dialogue surrounding certain topics that have too long been considered taboo. Her work is deeply embedded in community and self-discovery and is committed to bridging generational, gender and cultural divides.
