Traditional beauty - Houssam Mokrane

Traditional Beauty depicts, in Houssam Mokrane's unique and vibrant visual style, a beautiful woman, wearing traditional Algerian garb, serving tea. Inspired by the song ''يا الزينة '' by The Famous Musical Groupe Raina Rai, Mokrane tantalisingly and effectively explores the role of the woman in Algerian culture through the light-hearted reference to popular music culture. What is the role of this young and beguiling heroine in Algerian society, and is her worth indicated by her charm, delicacy and poise, or something greater? We are often faced with these questions in day-to-day life, however, when placed within the visual aesthetic of ‘pop culture’, it may be easier to reflect and ask questions on our embedded beliefs.

Houssam Mokrane is an illustrator from Algeria, currently based in Paris, France. He is dedicated to the old traditions of illustrative art, and his artworks weave motifs from his Algerian heritage through a self-described ‘PopCulture style.’

Each artwork is made available in one size only that is specifically chosen by our in-house art curators based on the most ideal dimensions for the artistic creation on display.
