Not unlike Rorschach ink images, that which the viewer first perceives here can vary greatly, perhaps revealing as much about the onlooker as about the artist. In ‘The Life’, surrounding a central, surreal luminous moon rise over the water, a lone boater hauls up—or perhaps lowers—a human body with a fishing line. Is he a saviour or a murderer? Is the body in the water alive or dead? Is this a victim of suicide or drowning? Perhaps they are none of these things; the image raises a plethora of questions. The crisp, digital print in chilly indigo shades gives a cross-section view into the water’s depths where an ambiguous shipwreck lurks in the shadowy depths. The letters drifting nearby obliquely mirror the floating bottle on the surface. Messages have been sent, but have they been received?
