Old is Gold is described by Adige Batur as an artwork which focuses on the “city of today, the people of the past.” Juxtaposing several men practising of Ramadan in an unnamed, stereotypical European city, Batur portrays a candid and contemplative setting which speaks to topics of immigration, globalisation and the merging of cultures.
Utilising an approach rooted in colour theory, Old is Gold portrays seven observers of Ramadan in washed-out brown colouration, as if they have been lifted and stuck from a painting from the past, onto a modern European cosmopolitan. The background is void of colour, with the exception of the vibrant yet hazy street lamps, seemingly replacing the crescent moon which the religious observers would have been following if not for the smog, cloud and visibility-blocking roofline of the city.
Adige Batur is a poet, designer, calligrapher and artist from Turkey. Their interests revolve the magical reality and mythology, often blending miniature art and middle eastern designs, as well as political borders, where they often juxtapose lost geographies, social problems and the divide between old and new within artworks.
