Not a Kiss – Ben Ramzy

- +

Inspired by the famous 19th Century Adam Styka painting, Couple, and a repurposed image of Gustav Klimt’s 1907 work The Kiss, Ben Ramzy’s collage, Not a Kiss, has one foot in history, and the other in contemporary craftsmanship.

With a foreground embezzled with mosaic stonework and a gold washed background, Not a kiss is a painting which presents two figures almost melting together in hungry embrace. Their bodies are bound within the same cloth, a shimmering golden tapestry, laden with symbolism focused on both anatomy and intimacy.  They smile into the distance, totally engulfed within each other’s grasps, beguiled and mesmerised in the golden haze of romance.

The work is playful, and through its capturing of two iconic paintings of history from entirely different cultures, indicates to viewers the universality of love.

Ben Ramzy is a graphic designer currently based in Oran, Algeria. He is currently working in communications, whilst making pop art and collage in his spare time.
