“The moon in the sky and stars in the horizon waving”
How does society remember those who have fought for the prosperity of future generations? Are their names emblazoned within the books of history and the pedestals of monuments, or, because of their defiance, thrown to the side-lines by the societal majority they opposed only to be famed, in cult-status, by the generations to which their work benefited.
Moon in the sky seeks to depict the many strong women who have blazed pathways and opened doors for freedom, empowerment and emancipation for females in the Middle East. Set in outer space, El Zayal brings several motifs into play in this cunning work. It simultaneously and effectively places these women as trailblazers with the core strength of a meteor, posits them as demigods through their place in the heavens, and encourages the idea that they are shining stars, illuminating generations of women through the dark pathway of patriarchy.
