It is sometimes said that in the Middle East, instead of working, women stay at home and get pregnant. Although this deeply ingrained attitude towards the role of women is beginning to level, these traditions remain present in parts of society.

Money from him and me takes inspiration from the concept of the stay at home mother. Depicting an arresting and delightful woman on her wedding day holding and wearing various flowers, the text, Congrats! From him the money and from you the kids” flips this icon on its head. As women progress into equal roles within society, what are the ramifications? Will the result be a happier and more balanced household, or will the challenging of age-old customs light a camp-fight along the divide of liberal and conservative family members.

Shahad Nazer is a Saudi Arabian and Egyptian Artist who works primarily in collage. She is currently working as an artist and graphic designer and has been painting since she was 10 years old. Her work often explores topics such as female empowerment, the Middle East, and sustainability.
