In the Middle East, mental illness is often looked at like a flaw. Stigmatizing these issues can be traumatic for those dealing with conditions such as anxiety and depression, and often results in the process of seeking help becoming much more difficult.

Mental Illness uses the Arabic word for ‘fault’ within the error-icon to impinge the Middle Eastern perspective on such issues. Posited in a humorous and light-hearted way however, Shahad Nazer is able to circumvent the barriers placed on those facing issues with mental health, and instead highlight the ludicrous system which narrowly defines their issues. People should seek help, have access to information, and easily strive to improve their mental state, rather than become side-lined by a society which considers their flaws uncurable.

Shahad Nazer is a Saudi Arabian and Egyptian Artist who works primarily in collage. She is currently working as an artist and graphic designer and has been painting since she was 10 years old. Her work often explores topics such as female empowerment, the Middle East, and sustainability.

Comes in our framed canvas which is a 38mm stretched canvas within a traditional picture frame. The simple addition of a high quality wooden picture frame creates a completely new form of wall art; quite distinct to any other form and is sure to create a timeless piece on your wall.

The thin frame sits approximately 5mm from the edge of the canvas helping create a floating border.
