Referencing the Batman franchise, a fictional superhero story which initially appeared in a 1939 D.C. comic publication, Is it getting crazier out there? depicts two Jokers, the villain and arch-enemy of the comic’s namesake, Batman. One Joker takes inspiration from the Batman film The Dark Night, 2008, the other from Joker, 2019, which were played by Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix respectively.
Mokrane’s work speaks to the transience of the superhero and the supervillain. In the foreground of the digital work, we see a crowd, illuminated within a red hue presumably coming from the tail light of a state-service vehicle, fantasising and galvanising the spectacle of the two supervillains in front of them. Is it getting crazier out there? explores the concept of the celebrity, the hero, the villain, and the interchangeability of those behind the mask, or in the Joker’s case, makeup.
