Adige Batur’s recent paintings exist to examine place through the juxtaposition of old and new. This is stylistically emphasized in his work Intertemporal, a digital artwork which portrays a contemporary and historical Turkish café setting split down the middle by a cobbled laneway.
Intertemporal forces us to question how a place develops over time, and how people of different periods interact with old and new spaces. Is the polished, varnished and clean contemporary, with its elegant design and ergonomic furnishings, or the floral scene of the past with social meetings and a dazzling golden hue more enticing? Or, is Batur perhaps suggesting that we shouldn’t forget about under the mass and global developments brought on by technology?
Adige Batur is a Turkish artist, poet and writer born in the 1980s. He has a keen interest in visual expression, calligraphy, and the pursuit of magical realities which exist alongside all of his creative outputs. Recently, Batur has focused on the invalidity of political borders and lost geographies, where many of his paintings have sought to examine and in turn remove borders between the old and new.
