Heritage - Houssam Mokrane

Heritage is a stunning and visually captivating portrayal of an Algerian carpet market, a much-treasured tradition in the country. Reminiscent of oil on canvas paintings such as Jean-Léon Gerome’s The Snake Charmer, 1879, Heritage demonstrates both the grandiosity and beauty of the tradition of rug manufacturing in Northern Africa.

Bound by two scenes: men gathering in a close debate in the foreground of the work and distant workers dangling a larger-than-life carpet over the room’s internal balcony, the viewer is instantaneously captured by the motive and elegant setting, as if transported to the carpet market themselves. There is a sense of lively action, debate and motion which brings the work, and its viewers, together.

Houssam Mokrane is an illustrator from Algeria, currently based in Paris, France. He is dedicated to the old traditions of illustrative art, and his artworks weave motifs from his Algerian heritage through a self-described ‘PopCulture style.’
