Days in Peace by Baqer Jamel’s is an artwork indicating hope and levelling frustration around the coronavirus pandemic. Directing a message which translates to ‘hopefully these days will pass peacefully’, coupled with a half man half television Frankenstein, Jamel accurately and successfully comments on the hope and hopelessness felt by the global community as ominous news and heart-wrenching statistics permeate our minds through various news sources. Ultimately, Days in Peace provides reiterated sense of anticipation regarding the end of this ‘new normal’.
One day, in the future, the virus will pass and our hero will remove the television from his head, a metaphor for what we are all glued to at home, and re-join the real world of love, family and interaction unblemished by social distancing. The only question is when.
Baqer Jamel is an illustrator, currently based in Iraq. His works encroach on topics such as social and humanistic manners, where his most recent series is focused on the ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic.
