Café Terrasse - Ben Ramzy

- +

Ben Ramsy’s Café Terrasse takes inspiration from Café Terrace at Night, Vincent Van Gogh’s 1888 oil painting, commonly known as ‘The Café Terrace on the Place du Forum.’ Ramzy’s work utilises the colour palette, vibrancy and identifiable starred night motif ubiquitous in Van Gogh’s works, however, he superimposes three Arabic figures in the foreground of the painting.

Contrasting elements of traditional French oil painting alongside a contemporary Arabic café scene featuring gahwa and dallah, Ramzy provides a stark yet effective juxtaposition of the global reach of Western traditions and the globalisation of modern life. Does the clashing of cultures seem incompatible, or, does the new reality of the 21st century seem enticing and hopeful?

Ben Ramzy is a graphic designer currently based in Oran, Algeria. He is currently working in communications, whilst making pop art and collage in his spare time.
