Tales, memoirs and legends of Eastern civilisation have long struck the imagination and production of artists in both the East and West. Adige Batur is no exception. In his recent work, Ambush!, Batur explores the moment in which the Ottoman army, during the 18^th century, stepped foot on American soil to assist in the battle against invaders alongside native American forces.

Over the snowy mountains in a juxtaposition of brown, red and blue colours we see two cultures collide and unite. Ambush! asks one to reflect on the merging of different armies and peoples throughout history to unify and divide against different causes. What side do we fall on, and where civilisations differ, who becomes ally?

Adige Batur is a Turkish artist, poet and writer born in the 1980s. He has a keen interest in visual expression, calligraphy, and the pursuit of magical realities which exist alongside all of his creative outputs. Recently, Batur has focused on the invalidity of political borders and lost geographies, where many of his paintings have sought to examine and in turn remove borders between the old and new.
